Terms of the Factory Pass
What you get, what counts, whose rights are whose, how long we keep things
The Factory Pass puts one manuscript through the studio's book factory: a transmittal, an optional generated authoring template, unlimited inspections, and builds that each yield an EPUB and a print-ready interior PDF. These are the terms you agree to when you redeem or buy a pass, and again when you tick the attestation on your transmittal. They are written to be read, not skimmed.
1. What is delivered
A pass covers one manuscript, in one project. For it you get: a transmittal (your book's specification); an authoring template (.docx / .odt) generated from that transmittal, optional — any editor that exports .docx works; unlimited Inspect runs (a conformance report on your file); and a number of builds. Every build produces, together, an EPUB and a print-ready interior PDF at your trim size, machine-typeset in the studio's house style with licensed print fonts, plus the Inspect report for that file.
The deliverable is a correctly typeset PDF and EPUB of the manuscript as it conforms to your transmittal. If the file departs from the template, Inspect says where; the build sets what it is given. The print PDF is RGB; your printer converts to their colour profile. The Typst source, the house template and the fonts stay with the factory and are not delivered.
2. How builds count
A pass includes three builds. One build = one EPUB and one print PDF from the same file, at the same time. Each completed build uses one. Inspect never uses one, however often you run it. More builds can be added to the same pass (see the price table).
3. Failed builds are not counted
If the factory errors out — the build does not finish and no files are produced — that build is not counted and the credit comes back to your pass automatically. A build that finishes but does not look the way you hoped is counted: run Inspect, fix the file, build again. That is what the three are for.
4. Rights are yours — and so is clearing them
You keep every right in your manuscript, your cover and your images. The studio takes no licence in your work beyond what it needs to typeset it and hand the files back to you, and it makes no claim on the output: the PDF and EPUB are yours to publish, sell and distribute as you see fit.
By the same token, clearing rights is your responsibility. The factory typesets what you send. It does not check whether you hold the rights to a quoted poem, a reprinted essay, a photograph or an illustration, and it cannot. If a third party makes a claim over material in a book the factory set for you, that is between you and them; you agree the studio is not a party to it.
5. The attestation
Your transmittal carries one checkbox: “Everything in this manuscript is mine or I have permission to reprint it. The factory typesets what I send; clearing rights is my responsibility.” Ticking it records the date and time with your transmittal. It is not a formality we hide in a footer — it is the one thing we ask you to say out loud before the machine runs.
6. There is no editing service
The factory is a typesetting machine. It does not copyedit, proofread, fact-check or develop your text, and nobody at the studio reads your manuscript as part of a pass. Typos in go as typos; they come out set in a nice typeface. The only human add-on is the Preflight Review (a written reply to one file and its Inspect report), and even that is about conformance to the template, not about your prose.
7. Your data is kept for six months
Your project stays live for six months from redemption: rebuildable, downloadable, all outputs kept. It then goes read-only for 30 days — you can still download everything, you just can't build. After that the source manuscript, the cover image and every output are purged. We keep only metadata: title, dates, build counts, and the transmittal record itself. A storage extension is available before the read-only window closes.
Your files are stored on the studio's own server, are not used to train anything, and are not shared with anyone outside the studio except the services needed to run the factory (hosting, email, payments). Uploading a manuscript does not publish it.
8. Cover and fonts
The factory makes the inside of the book. The cover is yours to design or commission; a front-cover image you upload is embedded in the EPUB and nowhere else. Print fonts are licensed to the studio for typesetting and are embedded in the PDF as the licence allows; the font files themselves are never delivered.
9. Refunds
A pass on which no build has run can be refunded; email us. Once a build has completed, the pass has been used and is not refundable, though any unused builds stay on it for the life of the project. Failed builds are never charged (point 3).
10. Changes and contact
If these terms change, the date at the top changes with them and the version you agreed to stays in your transmittal history. Questions to j@djinna.com.
